O Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge, apresentado por C4 Waterman, é a competição “SUP Big Wave” de stand-up paddle que ocorre no período de espera entre 15 de janeiro e 28 de fevereiro de 2010, quando as ondas passam de 15 pés em Makaha Point na costa oeste de Oahu.

A organização do evento esperava dar início à competição no domingo, dia 31 de janeiro, devido as previsões que indicavam um swell de noroeste. Mas, esse swell não se concretizou. Agora, a espera vai até 28 de fevereiro e os organizadores monitoram a movimentação do swell nas ilhas havaianas para dar o sinal verde.

“Ku Ikaika” – uma frase havaiana que significa ficar forte – surgiu em referência ao Stand Up Paddle e a ideia de defender uma abordagem mais saudável e positiva para o esporte.

Em uma veia semelhante ao recente Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, que rolou em 8 de dezembro de 2009, o Quiksilver Ku Ikaika é uma competição para convidados em um dia de big surfe.

A competição vai reunir trinta dos melhores atletas do esporte mais seis surfistas que participarão de triagens. O evento inaugural aconteceu em 2008 e o famoso waterman havaiano Aaron Napoleon foi o campeão.

A lista de convidados para este ano de 2010 apresenta uma mistura de lendários e novos especialistas em Stand Up Paddle Surf. Essa lista inclui o atual campeão Napoleão, Jamie Mitchell (Austrália), Raimana Van Bastolaer (Tahiti), Ibon Amatriain (Euskadi), Robby Naish (Havaí), Gerry Lopez (Havaí) , além do brasileiro Alex Salazar.

O Ku Ikaika Challenge vai oferecer um prêmio total de US$ 10.000 e US$ 3.000 para o vencedor. Veja abaixo a lista completa dos convidados.

The Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge, presented by C4 Waterman, is an invitational big-wave stand up paddle (SUP) surfing competition that will run on one day between January 15 and February 28, 2010, when wave face heights exceed 15 feet at Makaha Point, on the west shore of Oahu.

Organizers of the third annual Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge, have issued a NO GO for competition at Makaha, Sunday 31, 2010. The approaching swell from the north-west is not expected to meet the required 15 feet minimum.

The event has until February 28, 2010, to run and organizers will continue to monitor each record winter swell as it approaches the Hawaiian Islands.

“Ku Ikaika”, a Hawaiian phrase that means stand strong, was derived in reference to the sport of stand up paddle surfing and to upholding a healthy and positive approach to wave riding.

In a similar vein to the recent Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau that ran on December 8, 2009, the Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge is a one-day big-wave invitational that features 30 of the sport’s leading experts. The inaugural event was staged on Valentine’s Day in 2008, and was won by well-known Hawaiian waterman Aaron Napoleon.

The 2010 list of invitees features a mix of legendary and rising SUP experts that includes defending champion Napoleon, Jamie Mitchell (Australia), Raimana Van Bastolaer (Tahiti), Ibon Amatriain (Euskadi), Robby Naish (Hawaii), and Gerry Lopez (Hawaii).

The Ku Ikaika Challenge will offer a total prize purse of $10,000, with $3,000 going to the winner. The main event will consist of 30 invited surfers plus six trialists. (Invitees listed below.)
