After extension, Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge doesn’t run

Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge
Presented by C4 Waterman

Makaha Point, West Side Oahu
15 January – 28 February 2009

Holding Period Ends But No Competition

A record winter of surf on the North Shore of Oahu failed to deliver to the West Side within the allotted one-and-a-half month holding period, resulting in a ‘no go’ for this year’s Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge, presented by C4 Waterman, at Makaha.

Despite record patience and an extension to the holding period, Mother Nature cast the final dice and came up short. Makaha delivered only eight- to 10-foot of swell today and organizers elected to wait another year. The Ku Ikaika Challenge is a one-day, big wave standup paddle (SUP) surfing competition that features over 30 of the world’s leading SUP riders.

“Ku Ikaika”, a Hawaiian phrase that means stand strong, was derived by Makaha’s Brian Keaulana, co-founder of C4 Waterman. The phrase is a reference to both the sport of stand up paddle surfing as well as a call to uphold a healthy and positive approach to wave riding.

O título ficou com Greg Long.

Aguardem.

In a stacked final that included Shane Dorian, Grant “Twiggy” Baker, Carlos Burle, Ramon Navarro and Grant Washburn, it was Mark Healey who rose to the top and took home the top prize — a Costco-sized bottle of Patron, a ton of bragging rights and his first international big-wave victory. Often a bridesmaid but never a bride, Healey was long overdue to win something like this. His calculated but aggressive backhand approach has been blowing minds in heavy rights across the globe for more than a decade now, but this was the first time he was able to channel that skill and put it all together in a final.

In absolute elation and still a little out of sorts from the celebratory fiesta, Healey commented: “I’m fired up! It would have been nice to win some money, but to be honest, it feels like I just won $100,000. We’ve got a movement going on and the caliber of surfing in the event was as high as any other event, every heat was like a final. Guys are hungry and going to the end of the world to chase these waves. It feels good to win.”

Burle Photo:y Jason Murray

“After 10 years of trying to get a sponsor to renew the event, we finally had a commitment in August but when it came down to the start of the waiting period, they pulled the plug,” explained Linden, a legendary shaper, event director and father to this contest. “Faced with not having the event after six months of work, we made a decision to continue on our own without prize money. Greg said he would donate his Eddie bonus, inspiring us all to go the extra mile to make the dream come true. Knowing it was an El Nino winter, we had to take advantage of the opportunity. A big-wave world tour without Todos does not seem legit.”

Throughout the day, the level of big-wave surfing was incredible. In second place, Shane Dorian put on a style clinic and surfed Todos with such a relaxed approach that it almost looked effortless. Good to see he didn’t waste any time getting back on the horse after his heavy wipeout at Mavs two weeks back. During the awards, Shane commented, “There will never be another event like this, guys surfing for nothing else other than the love of it.”

Gabriel Photo Jason Murray

Gabriel “Peru” Villaran won the “Wave Of The Day” award, but he was thrilled just be in the event, let alone walk away with the best ride of the day. With a celebration to match the day’s biggest sets, the victory party went on well into the night.

There’s only a month left in the North Pacific swell cycle and it’s safe to say this was one of the best winters on record: Numerous big-wave events were seen, epic rides were had in all conditions and the paddle barrier was pushed to new heights. As the long days of summer near, it’s a bit sad to think the party’s almost over. Here’s hoping the ocean has one more swell in her to give us all a proper send off.

Kay Lenny (17 anos) venceu o primeiro evento do Stand Up World Tour em Sunset e deixou claro o domínio da juventude.

After an epic trials event and spectacular morning for the Top 32 on Wednesday in a maxing out Sunset Beach, today dawned more manageable for the assembled riders, but still with solid sets coming through, providing the arena for the most spectacular display of riding in the history of stand up paddlesurfing competition.

6 – 8ft with the occasional bigger sets, the whole fleet was on fire, with explosive turns and barrel rides becoming standard for each heat. Major upsets in the second round included the exit of local favorites Kainoa McGee, Duane DeSoto and Chuck Patterson, while Sunset Beach local Kamaki Worthington was shining in the challenging and unpredictable surf, as was the young Kai Lenny, proving himself amongst the collective of ocean sports legends. Also standing out was Ekolu Kalama from Molokai, Bonga Perkins and Kekoa Uemura from Oahu, charging hard and providing a spectacle for the assembled crowds.

Sunset Photo Bruno Lemos

As we came to the Semi Finals, the level of competitive, performance surfing was through the roof, and despite some incredible riding, Ekolu Kalama, Bonga Perkins, TJ Saemen and Aaron Napoleon all fell to the hands of the on form Kamaki Worthington, Kekoa Uemura, Frenchman Peyo Iralour and the youth phenom, Kai Lenny.

Head Judge Leleo Kinimaka introduced the beach start for the Final heat, providing entertainment for the assembled crowds as the riders not only had to focus on the waves, but also the fearsome Sunset Beach shorebreak! What followed was one of the most spectacular finals imaginable, with all riders pulling out the stops to be crowned Champion of the Sunset Beach Pro, presented by Red Nose: Kekoa Uemura was on fire and putting it all on the line, to the point that he also earned the award for the most radical wipeout! Kamaki Worthington, fresh from an epic semi final (where he was presented with the Single biggest move award by Da Hui and a $1,000 for his efforts), was still charging hard, with critical turns and fluid riding at his homebreak. Frenchman Peyo Lizaruzu was still demonstrating his exceptional ability and demonstrating that his position in this prestigious final was more than deserved. But all this talent and performance riding was not enough to stop 17 year old Kai Lenny from dominating from start to finish, with an incredible display of performance riding and event maturity that was way beyond his years.

Photo Bruno Lemos

As Champion of the first ever World Championship event, stop one on the Stand Up World Tour, the future is bright for this teenager from Maui. His talent, humble nature and focus has allowed him to take the world by storm and place him firmly at the head of the ratings after the first event, and crowned him the Sunset Beach Pro Champion for 2010.

In between the semis and finals, the Na Kama Kai youth event took place, showcasing Hawaii’s most talented youth, but also highlighting the non profit Na Kama Kai that provides ocean sports opportunities for Hawaii’s underprivileged youth (see www.nakamakai.com). After an epic showdown, it was Maui’s Zane Schweitzer who came out on top, closely followed by Bullet Obra from the Big Island and Connor Baxter from Maui. It is such a special thing to be able to witness the youth, our future, clearly demonstrating that the future of this incredible sport and the Stand Up World Tour is not only secure, but brighter than ever.

From Slater Trout winning the Trials event at just 15 years old, to Riggs Napoleon making it into the main event at just 12 and ending with Kai Lenny winning the first ever Stand Up World Tour event here at Sunset Beach, this week has been dominated by the youth, showing that the story is only beginning to be told. We look forward to bringing you the next chapters of this story as we move onto France in May, Tahiti in June and California in October.

O Evento Todos Santos Big Wave promete decidir o cameão mundial de ondas grandes, Big Wave World Tour.

Competidores - The riders

Todos Santos Big Wave Event is set to decide on the Big Wave World Champion!

Poster oficial

Since the Mavericks Surf Contest went off in epic conditions on February 13th, 2010, the Todos Santos Big Wave Event is the last remaining event of the Big Wave World Tour this season.

Californian surfer Greg Long still holds the lead of the Big Wave World Tour Ranking with two wins this season in Peru and Hawaii. Carlos Burle’s 5th place at 25 foot plus Mavericks puts him in striking distance of the first ever Big Wave World Champion Title. Mavericks’ winner Chris Bertish added valuable points to his BWWT tally, now 900 points behind the leader he is still capable of taking up the crown!

Set to unfold on the next big swell (waves exceeding 30 foot faces) the Todos Santos Big Wave Event is designed to be the grand finale of the Big Wave World Tour.

Surfers’ representative Greg Long (tour leader since Chile) will have the “home court advantage” at Todos, as he developed his big wave skills for more than a decade surfing Killers. BWWT #2 surfer, Brazilian Carlos Burle is also familiar with Todos. During the first ever competition in 1998, Burle mystified the international community by winning the event in gigantic 50-foot range surf. South African Chris Bertish, with the momentum of winning the Mavericks Surf Contest, will also be a man to watch during the Todos event. Chris won the paddle-in Swell.com XXL Award in 2001 for the biggest wave that year with a ride at Todos Santos, which he described as, “…the best big surf I have ever experienced.”

The stage is set for a captivating finish of the first Big Wave World Tour season in the Mexican waters of Todos Santos.

The Todos Santos Big Wave Event is a grassroots event fueled by passion and is an official ASP International Charity Event. The jersey of the event’s winner will be donated to Keep A Breast Foundation and will be auctioned to support KAB’s mission to inform youth about breast cancer prevention.

Olukai footwear, Von Zipper eyewear, and Sector 9 skateboards have joined the event as supporting sponsors along Future Fins, Baja Bound Insurance, Surfline and Linden Surfboards.

Go Big!

Reflecting about the Mavericks Contest

Grant Twiggy Baker

22 feet, 17 seconds and glassy. Enough said, well almost. After months of anxious waiting, second guessing on missed opportunities, legal wrangling and some epic free surf sessions, the Mavs contest finally happened in what many are considering the biggest waves ever surfed in a jersey. From the epic daybreak pre-contest waves of Rusty Long and Shane Dorian to the final heat with Carlos Burle putting it all on the line, the level of performance shattered the ceiling of what was previously considered paddleable.

As Grant “Twiggy” Baker succinctly stated, “Tow surfing is dead.”

Chris Bertish was named the champion but as cliché as it may sound, anyone who paddled out there was winner and had a hand in altering the future of big-wave surfing. What Jeff Clark started long ago alone in the fog a half mile off Pillar Point has morphed into something we could only dream about before Saturday — paddling into 60-foot-plus surf.

Shawn Dollar

50,000 fans cheered on shoulder to shoulder from packed cliffs, the beach and an armada of boats that filled the channel while set after set pounded the lineup from dawn to dusk. Another 40,000 people watched from the high tide surge-free zone of their living rooms. The total prize purse of $150,000 was the largest in big-wave surfing history, fitting considering the size of the surf. For his efforts, Bertish pocketed 384,727 Rand. He can probably now afford to pay back his brother who loaned him the money for his ticket from South Africa.

Anthony Tashnick won the gnarliest drop award and Dave Wassel won the Jay Moriarty Award, given to the surfer who best exemplifies the spirit and passion that Jay was famous for. Wassel thanked the Half Moon Bay locals for accepting him, was also blown away by today’s conditions. “It was undoubtedly the largest surf any paddle-in contest has ever seen.” Having just won the Todd Chesser award in Hawaii a few week back, it’s safe to say the aloha and respect runs deep in Dave.

Now that I’ve had a few days to go collect myself, lick my wounds and edit all the images, a few things stand out. The biggest and thickest waves in no particular order were ridden by Shawn Dollar, Twiggy, Rusty Long, Peter Mel, Alex Martins, Carlos Burle, Anthony Tashnick, Zach Wormhoudt, and Kohl Christensen although pretty much everyone who was out there got at least one memorable wave.

It’s interesting a judges scaffolding and some beach tents being taken out by a “rogue wave/tsunami” would get more attention than the record-setting surfing that was going on less than a half mile from where the spectators were getting dragged across the beach. I guess that’s just the norm for the sensationalistic news media that feeds the masses. Do people really get more excited seeing a pale tourist dragged across the beach in his wet jeans by a tidal surge than seeing the best surfers in the world packing 30-foot bombs? I hope not or we’re all doomed.

Another subject lingering in the busy lobes of my brain is the judging. Scoring surfing has and always will be a subjective thing that very rarely ends in a universally agreed upon result. It’s one of the things that makes surfing interesting but also can frustrate the hell out of competitors and fans alike. It doesn’t matter whether it’s 30-foot Mavs or four-foot Snapper Rocks, beauty is in the eye of the beholder or is it beer holder?

Carlos Burle

In either case, the format of the Mavs contest should be changed to the “Eddie-style” where one is judged on the four best waves across two heats instead of the current elimination format. It’s a big wave contest, so the biggest and heaviest waves ridden or attempted should be rewarded. If you get a 10 in your heat, you should be rewarded. The guy who gets two “six’s” should not advance over the guy who got the a “10,” but couldn’t find a back up score. Otherwise, you’re rewarding the conservative approach and that really isn’t what big-wave surfing is about. It’s about calculated risk, gigantic balls and dropping in with little to no concern for the potential dangers of what might happen. Carlos Burle got fifth in the final, but he was charging harder than anyone out there. Granted, he didn’t make many of his waves, but he was putting on quite a show, enough so that most in the channel thought he had won.

So in one day, the history of big-wave surfing has been re-written while the whole world was watching. It didn’t happen on a remote reef or during some secret session. It happened in a contest, in plain view of web cams and every single surf media outlet in the world taking note. What was previously though impossible will now be the norm. The big question is how much bigger can a surfer paddle into? One thing is certain, the current crop of big wave surfers out there charging will surely keep pushing that boundary towards the sky.

English version.

California Monster Slab bombs wile all eyes were on the Maverick’s Contest.

The day was big and clean, the best most consistent swell of the season. A tight nit group of chargers showed up to reap the benefits of this massive swell. Van Curazza, Chris Ward, Chad Jackson, Christian Enns, Eric Akiskalian and Chris Brown were all whipped into beasts on this day. While the Mavericks contest stole the show, these guys quietly pulled into some of the biggest tubes California has ever seen! The waves were so big in fact that a 47 ft Coast Guard boat flipped over in 20ft waves while attempting to rescue Chris Ward, his girlfriend and Maui Tow surfer David Langer from Wardo’s 13ft Sea Pro boat that broke down 1 mile from show. The Coast Gurd Boat flipped over and ejected Chris Ward and His Girlfriend into the 52 degree water without wetsuits! Luckily Ed Guzman and Don Curry were there to swiftly retrieve the ejected people. Luckily nobody was hurt and everyone got great waves… Another day in Paradise!

Fiz meu papel. Campeonato de ondas grandes é ir lá e pegar as maiores! As big as you can get, as deep as you can go. I’ll neve stay on the shoulder.” Desabafou o big rider Carlos Burle.
