Quem estará presente no Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau, ou “The Eddie”?

Isso sempre foi um assunto controverso. São apenas 24 vagas abertas e diversos grandes surfistas lá fora querendo participar. É claro que há manobras e politicagem apenas para entrar na lista de suplentes. Entretanto, o mais evidente aqui é a grande honra que representa ser selecionado. “Fazer parte disso, da cerimônia, da tradição, é uma das coisas mais significativas que você pode viver como um surfista. Só o fato de poder viver isso representa muito mais do que vencer a competição em si”, diz o big rider brasileiro Carlos Burle, figura carimbada e sempre presente no Eddie.

Na última edição, infelizmente, as condições não permitiram a realização do evento. Mas, este ano promete ser especial, pois marca o 25 º aniversário do Eddie inaugural (que, aliás, foi realizada durante o inverno de ‘84 / ‘85 em Sunset Beach, e não em Waimea). É também a mais longa competição de ondas grandes e é o único sancionado pela ASP. Além disso, há uma grande expectativa com as grandes ondulações por causa do El-Niño.

Como se não bastasse, dessa vez, o processo de seleção é uma novidade. Depois de anos sendo decidido pelo voto de poucos e exclusivos eleitores, a decisão de quem estará no Eddie será de todos nós: eu, você e qualquer um que deseje votar. É isso aí. Foi anunciado o voto aberto para o Eddie 2010. É a democracia no surfe. Mas não perca tempo, pois a votação é até 31 de agosto.

Esse novo modelo de escolha parece bastante interessante e mais democrático. O processo de seleção anterior deixou muito espaço para as teorias e especulações sobre “os escolhidos” quase comprometendo a credibilidade do evento. Nesse caso, este “voto popular” deve ajudar acabar com esses mitos. Por exemplo, o Havaí sempre foi fortemente representado na lista convidados, é claro que por motivos óbvios e com toda razão. Mas a busca por ondas grandes é algo tão global atualmente que não há razões para que um surfista não seja considerado apenas por que é do Brasil ou qualquer outro lugar… Sendo assim, colocando o poder nas mãos do povo, todos esperam obter uma lista de surfistas mais variada com os mais representativos atletas, quando as condições são 25 pés plus e fechando a baía.

Who should be invited to Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau—or “The Eddie”—is always a contentious issue. There is only 24 slots open and a big riders out there wanting to get in. So is obvious there are jockeying and politicking that goes on just to get on the alternate list.

However, the most obvious thong is what an honor being selected is. “Just to be part of it, the ceremony, the tradition, it’s one of the most meaningful things you be a part of as a surfer. Just to live and feel it represents more than winning a contest” says the brazilian big rider Carlos Burle, Eddie always present in as main guest.

In the last edition, unfortunately, the conditions did not allow the event goes on. But this year promises to be special because it marks the 25th anniversary of the inaugural Eddie (which incidentally was held during the winter of ‘84/’85 at Sunset Beach, not Waimea). Besydes, there is a great expectation about the big waves because of El Niño. Moreover, the selection process has been, modified. After years, this time common people like you and I will decide who’s in and who’s out of the 2010 Eddie, by an online polling announced at http://polls.quiksilver.com/.
But beware you only have until August 31st to have your vote.

This new model of choice seems quite interesting and more democratic. The previous selection process left much room for theories and speculations about “the chosen” almost undermining the credibility of the event. In this case, this “popular vote” should help mitigate whatever issues there were. For example, Hawaii has always been strongly represented on the list, it is clear that for obvious reasons and rightly so, but the big waves search is something so global now that there’s no reason a surfer shouldn’t be considered just because he is from Brazil or anywhere else … So, with this new “popular vote” system, everyone is waiting for a more varied list of surfers with the most representative athletes when conditions are closing out the Bay 25 feet plus.

It was finished, July 6th, the Billabong Pico Alto Invitatonal 2009, a traditional south american big wave surfing competition, that for the first time had international big wave riders in their list. At Pico Alto, Peru, four world’s top athletes (Carlos Burle, Greg Long, Mark Healey and Peter Mel) challenged two Peruvians in the final (Javier Swayne e Rafael Velarde).
Fifteen feet waves settled the perfect scenario for the final heat in Punta Hermosa. Greg Long stepped up early to the lead scoring a 8,50 and was not threatened by anyone until the end of the heat, summing a total of 23,50. Brazilian Carlos Burle did the opposite. He started slowly and was in the last place until the dying minutes when he surfed 7 point ride that pulled him straight up to second place, but needed a ride over 8 points to get to the lead, and ended in second place.
Peter Mel got the third place, summing 16,10, Mark Healey, that surfed only one wave, was fourth, with a total of 15 points. The Peruvian locals, Javier Swayne and Rafael Velarde, ended in the fifth and sixth place respectively, summing 14,05 and 13,35.
The Brazilian world champion showed once more that even being the most experienced athlete among the finalists, he has the attitude and is physically fitted to give the youngest a great challenge and to still end up in the top of big wave events, adding one more trophy in his victorious career.
During his speech on the podium, Burle remembered that his first international surf trip was to Peru, and has thanked many of the local guys that are his friends from years ago, as Magoo De La Rosa and his family. The Brazilian has also thanked the lifeguard team, specially LuisFer De La Torre, mentioning that the conditions were very hard in Pico Alto during the event.
