A segunda edição do Big Wave World Tour chega ao fim e Jamie Sterling é o novo campeão do circuito.

Basta perguntar a Gary Linden, fundador e manager do circuito.

Eu ganhei… [risos].

Disse o campeão.

Parabéns ao novo campeão Jamie Sterling.

Veja como fiou a classificação final do Big Wave World Tour 2010/2011:
1st Jamie Sterling – 2509
2nd Kohl Christensen – 1300
3rd Anthony Tashnick – 1257
4th Carlos Burle – 1250
5th Marcos Monteiro – 1131

Jamie Sterling will be crowned The Big Wave World Champion 10/11

Jamie Sterling © Kaenon

Jamie Sterling will be crowned the Big Wave World Champion 2010/2011 on April 30th at the Surfing Heritage Foundation (San Clemente, Ca). Even before the announcement was made official, tons of congratulations poured through Sterling Facebook page. Jamie reached the final of every events held this season including winning in Pico Alto (Peru) and had a commanding lead after Nelscott Reef.

I had been obviously tracking my rating on the tour all year and I was waiting for Maverick’s and Todos to happen. That was going to change things as far as the ratings go. Either it’d increase my lead even more or have my lead decrease depending on who won. But these events didn’t get to happen this year, due to lack of big swells. So the closing periods ended on the 28th of February and it was like…I won. [Laughs]. So I just kind of waited for the February 28th date. I was hoping that there would be a swell and I could win it with Todos or Maverick’s happening. But hey, a win’s a win. I’ll take it.

Starting a new surf world tour is not an easy task. Just ask Gary Linden. But the key is getting the surfers behind it (which he did). Next step is getting the sponsor backing (which is happening). But the third, uncontrollable variable is being on the receiving end of an XXL swell. (Or, ideally, a few XXL swells.)

Aside from an early NPAC flare up in November at Nelscott Reef, the last two tour stops (Mav’s and Todos) of 2010/2011 didn’t happen. And just as those waiting periods slammed shut on February 28th, Jamie Sterling let out a long sigh of relief. He didn’t get a phone call. There were no trophies or ceremonies (until he’s officially crowned in late April). But Sterls and everyone else on tour knew it was officially over.

Big Wave World Tour 2010/2011 rankings:
1st Jamie Sterling – 2509
2nd Kohl Christensen – 1300

The official contest waiting period begins Wednesday and continues through Feb. 28. The invitees get to vote on contest-worthy swells. Once the majority picks one, they will have 24-hours notice to get to the break near Half Moon Bay.

“I don’t think people really know what an honor it is to be standing here among these 30 world-class guys,” said defending Mav’s champion Chris Bertish of South Africa as he stood board to board with contestants, organizers and surf community notables on Maverick’s Beach. “Jay is truly the epitome of what big wave surfing is all about. It’s about respect for others, the brotherhood of big wave surfing and to have a smile on your face every time you go out. I’m stoked to be here.”

Veja o resultado final do Nelscott Reff Big Wave Classic:

1 – Kohl Christensen (HAW)
2 – Chris Bertish (AFR)
3 – Jamie Sterling (HAW)
4 – Kealii Mamala (HAW)
5 – Rusty Long (EUA)
6 – Peter Mel (EUA)
9 – Carlos Burle (BRA)
10 – Marcos Monteiro (BRA)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-5574" title="Maya Gabeira" src="http://carlosburle.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/146100_622x415-300x200.jpg" alt="Maya Gabeira.

Go big!

Surfers take over from Mavericks Surf Ventures…

A group of surfers and photographers won approval last night to take over management of Half Moon Bay’s famous big-wave competition, arguing that the event needs to be less corporate and more in touch with its maverick roots.

Members of the Half Moon Bay Surf Group watch on as Katherine Clark speaks on their behalf at Wednesday’s Harbor District meeting.

What began in 1975 with a lone local surfer, Jeff Clark, paddling out to ride monster waves that can break as high 50 or 60 feet, has grown into a competition known around the globe, with television coverage, corporate sponsors and $150,000 in prize money. That growth has caused tensions between many surfers and Mavericks Surf Ventures, the company that has run the competition since 2004.

“We were tired of seeing that ‘Super Bowl of surfing thing’ where it looks good on the surface, but underneath, you know it’s not working well,” said Grant Washburn, one of the world’s top big-wave surfers and a member of the group that persuaded the San Mateo County Harbor District to award it a permit to run the event this winter. “This is something we all want to be proud of.”

Under Harbor District rules, only one organization can hold the permit needed to host the annual Mavericks event, which takes place about half a mile offshore of Pillar Point Harbor and uses harbor facilities as a staging and viewing area. Last night, the Harbor District commissioners voted to award this winter’s permit to the new Hay Moon Bay Surf Group that includes Washburn and fellow big-name surfer Peter Mel; Clark’s ex-wife, Katherine; surf event organizer Darren Brilhart; and several surf photographers.

Harbor District General Manager Peter Grenell said safety was a primary issue for the commissioners. Last February, 13 spectators were swept into the ocean by two enormous waves that surged over the seawall where they were standing. No one was killed but several suffered broken bones. Critics said the bystanders should not have been so close to the action.

“[Half Moon Bay Surf Group] responded satisfactorally to all the concerns we had,” Grenell said, adding that the group’s finances appeared in order and it presented a sound organizational plan.

Speaking for the group at last night’s meeting, Katherine Clark, one of the original organizers, pledged that “I feel confident we can … put on the best event we’ve seen yet at Mavericks.” The new group now has to hustle to arrange an opening ceremony in coming weeks and be prepared to run the event as soon as Dec. 1. When the Mavericks competition occurs depends on when the waves are best – sometimes as early as December or as late as the end of February.

Keir Beadling, the chief executive officer of Maverick Surf Ventures, tried unsuccessfully to get the Harbor commissioners to delay a decision until November, to give him time to find common ground with the surfers’ group and possibly allow them to co-manage the event. Commissioners said they had granted such a delay in September and there were no signs of compromise. Before last night’s vote, Beadling said he might explore a lawsuit, citing trademark infringement and “wrongful conduct.”

Barracuda Networks, which previously financed the Mavericks Surf Ventures event, has pledged to work with the new management team and for the next three years fund what will now be called the Jay at Mavericks Big Wave Invitational.

Nelscott Reef wait period begins

Nelscott Reef promoters revealed the new web page for the 2010 Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic, confirming that this year’s event will indeed be a paddle in only event. The web page launch also coincides with the opening of the 3 month holding period.

As previously announced, the Nelscott Reef contest changed from a tow in event to a paddle in event. This change was brought on from pressure from the competitors after the previous years contests gave them a taste of paddling in to some Nelscott bombs. “The guys would rather paddle than tow, and they proved it can be done”, said event founder, John Forse.

The 2010 Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic is also participating as a stop on Gary Linden’s Big Wave World Tour. The tour includes four other events in Chile, Peru, Mexico, and California. 2010 will be the second season for the tour, which will grow from 4 events to 5, including Nelscott Reef.

The Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic continues to attract the top names in big wave surfing from around the world. Changing from a
tow in event to a paddle in event offers organizers some new talent for this year. Along with Nelscott veterans, there are a lot of surfers competing at Nelscott for the first time.

“I have a lot of respect for some of the older guys we invited that have chosen to step aside and let some of the up and coming talent take a turn”, said John Forse. “People like Gary Linden and Ross Clarke Jones have given up their spots for younger surfers to have a chance. It is the ultimate show of sportsmanship in my opinion”.

The Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic will continue to operate on a traffic light system during the holding period. Red represents no
favorable conditions in the near future. Organizers will change to yellow status if they spot a forecast for favorable conditions. If the event is called, the status will change to green and competitors will have 48 hours to make it to Lincoln City, OR.

This system has worked well in the past, as the event has been held on what turned out to be the best days of each of the past five years.

The Nelscott Reef web page contains the most up to date information on the event. People can sign up for email alerts as well.
The Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic is honored and proud be a part of the Big Wave World Tour and promote big wave surfing
internationally. For more info go to and nelscottreef.com and bigwaveworldtour.com.

The Billabong Pico Alto Invitational 2010 presented by Sony, went off in fantastic, huge surf.

The atmosphere surrounding the competitors was filled with energy and adrenaline. The grandstand full of spectators was shocked by the size of the waves. The generous force of nature gave us waves of more than 35 feet high, peaking during the semi final heats where the wave of the contest, a perfect 10 by Grant Baker from South Africa, was scored.

The local surfers demonstrated a high level of performance as well.

Gonzalo Velasco, Billabong team rider and Sebastian De Romaña arrived to the semi finals competing along side twelve of best international big wave riders, including current world champion Carlos Burle from Brazil and defending Billabong Pico Alto 2009, winner Greg Long from the USA.

Various surfers experienced extreme moments, the Peruvian Rafael Velarde lived through the intensity of Pico Alto in his first heat, when a wave of 24 feet high broke the board that he ridden to two previous Billabong Pico Alto finals (2006 and 2009).

Billabong Pico Alto Invitational Green Light confirmed by official forecast

Official Forecast for the Billabong Pico Alto Invitacional on the 2010/2011 Big Wave World Tour.
FORECAST UPDATE SUNDAY, AUGUST 15TH – by Surfline.com

Storm and swell is confirmed. See below Jason satellite pass last night with 33 foot seas – also not even in the peak of the storm which is probably closer to 40 feet. Also looks very good on the satellite loops. At this point, looks like a very, very good swell confirmed for the Pico Alto event for Thursday, August 19th. Winds on Thursday still expected to be light and variable from the south, not ideal, but not strong enough to really hurt the conditions either. Hopefully winds will improve and will be lighter.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the morning of the Quiksilver Ceremonial big-wave contest started off a little slow. Expectations were that yesterday we’d awake up to the thunderous sound of 15-foot sets marching across the reef of Punta Lobos. Instead, it was 8 to 10 feet, clean and glassy. Definitely not the ideal situation for a big-wave event. I guess forecasting isn’t perfect after all.

Then again, by the time the finals rolled around, the sets were peaking in the 18-to-20-foot range and it was considerably more serious. And with an all-star cast in said final that included Santa Cruz’s Peter Mel, Hawaii’s Mark Healey and Jamie Sterling, and of course, Greg Long, it was most definitely on. But even with big-waves heavies crowding the sizable lineup, it was Chilean charger Cristian Merello that managed walked away with the top honors. Displaying local knowledge, a committed approach, and a sheer will to win, 27-year-old Merello conquered the heavy lefts with a level of comfort and confidence well beyond his years.

Cristian Merello Photo: Jason Murray

Merello was elated with his accomplishment on a number of levels. “Winning this event was really special for me and it wasn’t just for me, it was for my mother, who is battling cancer and for the community of Pichilemu,” he explained. “My strategy was to sit as deep as possible and wait for the biggest waves. I felt so comfortable out there and I’ve surfed that board so many times at this spot that I knew what to do and did my best. Now, I’m hoping to get an invitation to the contest in Peru so I can keep going”.

Up until now, most of the surf world had never heard of Merello, but true to underground form, he has been charging the points of Chile for years. He’s gained invaluable experience as Ramon Navarro’s tow partner, and has now made amends for an early exit in last year’s semifinal that saw him suffer a knee injury and a subsequent three months of rehab.

“I’m stoked that Cristian won because his mom needed it and it’s good for his career,” told the ever-humble Navarro, the godfather of Chilean big-wave surfing. “It was a close call between Gabriel and him, but most importantly, it’s just amazing seeing the Latin American guys compete with the best big-wave surfers in the world.”

Diego Medina Photo: Jason Murray

Diego Medina, of Horcon, Chile, won the biggest drop of the day and the Waterman Award in Memory of Noel Robinson, which was voted on by fellow competitors. His wave was hands down the biggest wave of the day.

The community of Pichelemu and the other coastal cities of this region have had a rough go the past four months. This event, although brief, provided a well-deserved break and distraction from picking up the pieces of life after the earthquake and tsunami. It has been a long road to recovery, and they still have a long way to go, but optimism is in the air and the excitement of a hometown boy winning definitely added to the positive atmosphere. It’s good to see the local boys doing well and the crowd getting behind them. And to add to the aloha just a little bit more, all of the finalists agreed to donate half of their prize money to aid in earthquake relief.

Punta Lobos Cerimonial 2010 Photo: Jason Murray

“It was a fantastic start to the new season,” said Big Wave World Tour director Gary Linden, who was more than pleased with the day’s events. “To bring a world-class event to a rebounding community with the surfers donating half of their prize money to the benefit of the local fisherman was a gesture in the spirit of the passion that is driving this tour. We do it because we love it and we want to share that feeling with the rest of the world.”

With the first event of the 2010 Big Wave World Tour all wrapped up, the pisco flowing like water, and the basado providing a top-notch dinner, the day came to a perfect end. While some rocked out to a Doors cover band late into the night, a few of the competitors quickly re-packed their guns and headed up to Puerto to chase the swell. Surely, it’s going to be bombing up there this weekend — the biggest swell of the summer thus far, and with a good warm up under their belts here in Chile, the crew is ready for some giant beach break barrels.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4147" title="BWAC_CedricOrdioni_19" src="http://carlosburle.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/BWAC_CedricOrdioni_19-300x225.jpg" alt="Os top mundiais: Peter Mel, Mark Healey, Shane Desmond, Carlos Burle, Chris Bertish, Grant "Twiggy" Baker and Ramon Navarro.

CARLOS BURLE NAMED BIG WAVE WORLD CHAMPION

The champion Photo: Mike Cianciulli

In the beginning, it was simply for the challenge. Soon, the stakes were raised and the hunt focused on XXL checks. And now, heavywater surfers have a legitimate World Tour, which just named its first-ever Big Wave World Champion – Brazilian Carlos Burle. “What I did tonight doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to all of you. It belongs to our sport,” Burle said to an invite-only crowd of the world’s top chargers gathered at the Surfing Heritage Foundation. “All of you guys come up here and hold this trophy with me.”

Burle sharing the victory with the big riders By: Vittorio Sommella

One by one, the stage filled with the likes of Peter Mel, Mark Healey, Greg and Rusty Long, Ramon Navarro, Twiggy Baker and other courageous watermen. And for the first time in history, a sense of achievement resonated within the entire big wave community. Burle, obviously humbled to be the premiere champion of the newly founded tour, credited the brotherhood as his fountain of inspiration.

“I’m so happy to be here — at the age of 42 — to paddle around with you guys and push the limits,” Burle remarked in his acceptance speech. “What we do out there is not easy. What we do is the biggest and most stressful thing in the world. We never know when it’s going to happen. There is no agenda for us. We have to fly last minute, usually overnight. And we have to deal with those monster waves. We are the most prepared human beings in the world.”

Burle speech

Ironically, the last time a “big wave world championship” was held, Burle won. The 1998 ISA Big Wave Challenge at Todos Santos has provided a lasting stimulus for over 12 years. And now, after the four-event Big Wave World Tour (BWWT) completed its inaugural season, the hopes for a successful world circuit for heavywater surfing became a reality.

“The 1998 ISA event at Todos – those photos were a huge inspiration to me when I was coming up. We were dedicated to make it happen,” tour proponent Greg Long explained. “The Big Wave World Tour has been a dream of [tour organizer] Gary Linden’s for a long time. As big wave surfing has increased in popularity, why couldn’t everyone get on the same page and make something happen? You have to start somewhere. The idea was to create a tangible tour and grow it.”

By pooling the results from the Quiksilver Cermonial Puta de Lobos in Chile, the Billabong Pico Alto Invitational in Peru, the Maverick’s Surf Contest in California, and Todos Santos Big Wave Event in Mexico, Burle — a finalist in every event — was named the 2009/2010 Big Wave World Champion. Long, despite winning the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, finished seventh. (The Eddie is considered a specialty event separate from the BWWT. However, even if those results factored in, Burle would still be a top the rankings.)

Carlos Burle's season 2009-2010

The BBWT looks to add a fifth event for the 2010/2011 season by encompassing the revamped Nelscott Reef contest, which has shifted its scope from tow-in to paddle surfing. The tour also hopes to grow with sponsorship opportunities, specifically the Todos event which was personally funded by Long and Linden and offered no prize money.

“As much as we needed the money, it was the passion and spirit that made it happen,” Linden remembered. “Everybody worked for nothing. It’s one of the greatest things I got to experience in my surfing history. Everyone was there because they wanted to be. That wrapped the tour up nicely.”

And if you hang around the big wave brethren long enough, it’s clear their passion stems purely from love and bravery. Tour or no tour, prize money or a bottle of Patron, this crew will always be watching the LOLA charts and hopping red eye flights to the far corners of the globe to progress the sport of big wave surfing beyond what’s imaginable.

And as Long summed up on behalf of every big wave surfer in the room, “Regardless of prize money, we’d be doing this anyway.”
