Novas pesquisas pelo professor Tim Janssen, da San Francisco State University, sugere que as mudanças na profundidade das águas e as correntes, que são comuns em áreas costeiras, podem aumentar significantemente a aparição dessas ondas.</p>
<p>Publicada no Jornal de Oceanografia Física, o modelo de simulação de ondas de Janssen mostra que a focalização das ondas por bancos de areia e correntes pode aumentar as chances de uma onda monstro em até 10 vezes. Apesar de os cientistas ainda não poderem prever a ocorrência de ondas extremas individualmente, as descobertas de Janssen ajudam a marcar as condições e locações favoráveis a ondas gigantes.</p>
<p>Ondas extremas medem aproximadamente três vezes o tamanho de um determinado estado do mar. Algumas ondas gigantes já registradas ultrapassaram os 60 pés – mais que um prédio de 6 andares. A pesquisa de Janssen sugere que áreas onde a energia das ondas está mais direcionada, a probabilidade de atingirem um grande tamanho é maior do que se acreditava anteriormente.</p>
<p>As zonas focais das ondas são particularmente comuns em áreas costeiras onde há a variação de profundidade e que fortes correntes podem mudar drasticamente a força do seu foco. Esses efeitos são bem conhecidos em lugares onde desembocam rios e entradas litorâneas, restringindo a acessibilidade para embarcações devido às grandes ondas, ou resultando em problemas de erosão próximas à praia. Bons exemplos de zonas focais para ondas sobre topografia costeira incluem os mundialmente conhecidos picos de Mavericks e Cortez Bank, na Califórnia. A identificação de bons picos para ondas gigantes também é muito importante para facilitar navegações e lugares de atraque de barcos em áreas costeiras, e para a construção de estruturas nos arredores.</p>
<p>“Em um campo normal de ondas, na média, o máximo de ondas grandes é de 3 a cada 10 mil ondas,” disse Janssen. “Em uma área de foco, esse número pode aumentar até para 3 a cada mil ondas. Nessas áreas, a média da altura das ondas já é maior devido ao direcionamento de energia tornando uma onda gigante num lugar desses potencialmente perigosa e muito pesada.”</p>
<p>A simulação de ondas feita por Janssen estima a evolução das mesmas em oceanos, com ondas interagindo com correntes opostas, e ondas que viajam sobre diferentes características topográficas, como recifes. As simulações mostram que o as ondas desenvolvidas livremente mantém propriedades estatísticas de se manterem pequenas. Mas quando as ondas são focadas por variações na profundidade da água ou correntes, o rápido crescimento da energia faz com que tais interações aumente a probabilidade de que ela se torne realmente grande.</p>
<p>“Nós descobrimos que se o foco for suficientemente forte e abrupto, as interações da onda criam condições favoráveis para que se tornem gigantes,” disse Janssen. “Quando nós aumentamos gradualmente a força do foco, inicialmente as interações são fracas e as estatísticas continuam normais. Entretanto, quando aumentamos a força do foco além de certo ponto limiar, de repente as interações são aumentadas, então ondas gigantes são muito mais comuns que o normal. Parece que independentemente de as ondas passarem por transformações rápidas, as ondas gigantes conseguem manter-se fortes, até mais do que era esperado,” completou Janssen.</p>
<p>Tim Janssen é um professor assistente de Geociências na San Francisco State University. O trabalho é de co-autoria de T.H.C. Herbers da Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, na Califórnia.</p>

<p>Stories of ships mysteriously sent to watery graves by sudden, giant waves have long puzzled scientists and sailors. New research by San Francisco State professor Tim Janssen suggests that changes in water depth and currents, which are common in coastal areas, may significantly increase the likelihood of these extreme waves.</p>
<p>Published in the Journal of Physical Oceanography, Janssen&#8217;s wave model simulations show that focusing of waves by shoals and currents could increase the likelihood of a freak wave by as much as 10 times. Although scientists cannot predict the occurrence of individual extreme waves, Janssen&#8217;s findings help pinpoint conditions and locations favorable for giant waves.</p>
<p>Extreme waves, also known as &#8220;freak&#8221; or &#8220;rogue&#8221; waves, measure roughly three times the size of the average wave height of a given sea state. Recorded monster waves have exceeded 60-feet &#8212; the approximate size of a six-story building. Janssen&#8217;s research suggests that in areas where wave energy is focused, the probability of freak-waves is much greater than previously believed.</p>
<p>Wave focal zones are particularly common in coastal areas where water depth variations and strong currents can result in dramatic focusing of wave energy. Such effects are particularly well known around river mouths and coastal inlets, restricting accessibility for shipping due to large, breaking waves near the inlet, or resulting in erosion issues at nearby beaches. Extreme examples of wave focusing over coastal topography include world-class surf spots, such as Mavericks and Cortez Banks in California. The identification of freak wave hot spots is also important for shipping and navigation in coastal areas, and the design of offshore structures.</p>
<p>&#8220;In a normal wave field, on average, roughly three waves in every 10,000 are extreme waves,&#8221; Janssen said. &#8220;In a focal zone, this number could increase to about three in every 1,000 waves. In a focal zone, the average wave height is already increased due to the focusing of energy so that an extreme wave in such a high energy area can potentially be very energetic and dangerous.&#8221;</p>
<p>Janssen&#8217;s wave simulations estimated the evolution of waves in open oceans, waves interacting with an opposing current, and waves traveling over a topographical feature such as a reef. The simulations show that freely developing waves maintain normal statistical properties with a small likelihood of extremes. But when the waves are focused by variations in water depth or currents, the rapid increase in energy drives wave interactions that enhance the likelihood of extreme waves.</p>
<p>&#8220;We found that if the focusing is sufficiently strong and abrupt, wave interactions create conditions favorable to extreme waves,&#8221; Janssen said. &#8220;When we gradually increase the focal strength, initially wave interactions are weak and statistics remain normal. However, when increasing the focal strength beyond a certain threshold, suddenly wave interactions are enhanced and freak waves are much more likely than normal. It appears that wherever waves undergo a rapid transformation, freak waves can be much more likely than we would otherwise expect.&#8221;</p>
<p>Tim Janssen is an assistant professor of Geosciences at San Francisco State University. The paper is co-authored by T.H.C. Herbers of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.</p>

<p>Carlos Burle e Maya Gabeira foram para a África do Sul, Cidade do Cabo, mais precisamente no pico de Dungeons, em busca de um dos maiores swells do ano até agora. As previsões se confirmaram e os Big Riders brasileiros surfaram ondas gigantes estimadas em mais de 40 pés em condições extremas.</p>

<p>Esse dia épico rendeu a indicação ao prêmio de Maior Onda da Temporada do Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards 2009/2010, considerado o Oscar mundial do surf de ondas grandes.</p>
<p>Assim como na mesma época do ano passado, o mar ultrapassou os 30 pés de face, atraindo a atenção de alguns dos maiores nomes do surfe em ondas grandes.</p>
<p>Além de Burle e Maya, o californiano Greg Long e os sul africanos Andrew Marr e Grant &#8220;Twiggy&#8221; Baker também entraram na briga com as ondas surfadas no mega swell sul africano.</p>
<p>Burle, conta um pouco em seu Blog como foi a experiência desse dia inesquecível:<br />
&#8220;Nessa terça, 11 de agosto, o maior swell da temporada quebrou na temida bacada de Dungeons (Calabouço). As ondas subiram em condições adversas, com um vento maral que dificultou muito a performance das duplas. Eu peguei uma bomba enorme &#8211; uma daquelas da vida. (&#8230;) Maya surfou as maiores ondas da sua vida e colocou mais uma vez seu nome na história do surf mundial,&#8221; disse o campeão mundial.<br />
