Um big swell inesperado no oceano Pacífico alterour o prazo para as inscrições da edição 2011 do prêmio Billabong XXL desta temporada. O prazo foi prorrogado até dia 20 de março quando conheceremos a lista final dos candidatos ao prêmio que seriam conhecidos neste final de semana em um grande evento na cidade de Santa Cruz, Califórnia (EUA).

Alguns dos maiores big riders do mundo aproveitaram o swell para surfar Jaws na remada em condições perfeitas e gigantes.

O havaiano Shane Dorian se destacou com uma “bomba” com 25 a 30 pés de altura. Os brasileiros Carlos Burle, Danilo Couto (favorito a Ride of the Year no XXL com uma bomba também em Jaws), Marcio Freire e Yuri Soledade também estavam na água e fizeram a sua parte botando pra baixo nas montanhas de Jaws. O Swell que chegou primeiro ao Hawaii deve atingir o pico de Mavericks, na Califórnia.

O Billabong XXL oferece US$ 130 mil em dinheiro divididos pelos surfistas e fotógrafos vencedores das categorias Ride of the Year (melhor onda), Biggest Wave (maior onda), Monster Paddle (maior onda na remada), Monster Tube (melhor tubo) e Verizon Wipeout (maior vaca).

Os brasileiros Rodrigo Koxa, Danilo Couto, Márcio Freire e Pedro Scooby concorrem na principal categoria do evento, Ride Of The Year, na qual o vencedor leva a bolada de US$ 50 mil.

Carlos Burle, Everaldo Pato Teixeira, Rodrigo Koxa e o brasileiro naturalizado francês Eric Rebiere disputam o prêmio de Maior Onda.

Na categoria Monster Paddle, o Brasil é representado pelo trio baiano Márcio Freire, Danilo Couto e Yuri Soledade, além de Igor Lumertz, Carlos Burle e Felipe Cesarano.

Felipe Cesarano, Danilo Couto, Eric Rebiere e Pedro Scooby concorrem novamente na categoria Melhor Tubo e Everaldo Pato Teixeira e Tiago Candelot estão entre as maiores vacas do ano.

Inclusive, na Irlanda rolou uma competição de tow-in onde o franco-brasileiro Eric Ribiere levou a melhor, fazendo dupla com o espanhol Benjamin Sanchis.

Benjamin Sanchis também aproveitou o swell na costa francesa que lhe rendeu uma indicação ao Billabong XXL com uma bomba surfada no pico de Belharra, em Hossegor.

Swell trouxe boas ondas p/ Maresias

Esse mesmo swell trouxe boas ondas para o litoral carioca.

Depois de várias paradas em quase todos os picos, os irmãos foram para Maresias. Em Maresias, as condições eram extremas, com ondas de até três metros de face na série e somente Town In na água.

Eles registraram boas imagens com o Alemão de Maresias no comando da sessão que surfou com uma prancha sem amarras. Ainda de quebra, Renê e Rogério registraram algumas fotos da raríssima onda de Boissucanga. Ótimos tubos por lá!

(Aileens, Irlanda, 30 de outubro de 2009) – Al Mennie e Andrew Cotton conseguiram surfar ondas gigantes em dois oceanos em apenas uma semana.

A dupla acumulou mais de 8.000 milhas na semana passada em surf para dois swells em Aileens (Irlanda) e para competir no Nelscott Tow-In Classic (Oregon).

“Toda essa loucura começou na noite de sábado, 17 outubro, quando recebi um email de John Forse dizendo que o campeonato poderia ser realizado na quarta-feira (21), mas eles iriam fazer a chamada final na segunda-feira. Isso iria nos dar menos de 48 horas (considerando a diferença de fuso) para chegar a tempo em Oregon. Eu imediatamente telefonei para Cotty e começamos a pensar rápido.”, disse Al Mennie.

Al falou com Eric Akiskalian da Towsurfer.com sobre suas expectativas a respeito das previsões. Eric tem trabalhado com Al e Cotty, desde o início de suas carreiras de towsurfing no desenvolvimento de pranchas e equipamentos. Enquento isso, Eric já havia reservado um voo para Lincoln City para surfar o mesmo swell em South Reef e na laje. Então, os caras tinham certeza que John Forse e Adão Wagner iriam abrir o evento.

“Eu não queria agulhar o John nem o Adam, pois tinha certeza que todo mundo devia estar em cima deles para saber se iriam abirir o evento. Então, a experiência do Eric na região do Oregon nos deu a ideia do que iria rolar”, disse Andrew Cotton.

O campeonato foi confirmado para quinta-feira, dia 22, e essa foi uma grande notícia para o Al e pro Cotty assim como a notícia de que também havia uma previsão de swell enorme para Aileens na terça-feira. Eles organizaram os dias como uma operação militar. Voos, sono e os tempos de viagem de carro foram calculados para que conseguissem surfar Aileens e ainda chegar a tempo de competir em Oregon. Eles não queriam prejudicar nem a competição nem o swell em casa. E, como sabem que as condições para o big surf são raras, conseguiram fazer os dois.

Aileens bombou um swell sólido. As ondas estavam muito difíceis e quase no limite para resgates no inside se alguém se desse mal. Al e Cotty juntaram-se a seis skis e outros surfistas naquele dia, incluindo locais, australianos e ingleses. O pequeno grupo pegou um dos maiores dias já divulgados em Aileens com bombas de 40 ‘e 50′ de face.

Logo após surfar o enorme swell, eles embarcaram em um voo para Washington, segunda noite sem dormir para chegar ao evento uma da matina de quinta. Naquela mesma manhã bem cedo, eles encontraram John para um briefing da competição e testemunharam os big riders, Eric Akiskalian e Kieth Galbraith, botando pra baixo nas bombas de South Reef com 35 ‘a 40′. A competição foi surpreendente. Al e Cotty disseram que foi um dos melhores dias de surf da vida deles.

Após o evento, eles checaram os gráficos e, para a surpresa deles, Aileens iria quebrar logo que eles voltassem. Eles se jogaram em um avião e imediatamente estavam com tudo pronto para Aileens. O swell não foi tão grande quanto o primeiro, mas ainda assim rolaram boas ondas. Al, Cotty e Paul aproveitaram e depois ainda foram para outra ilha próxima para mais algumas ondas. Esgotamento total e falta de sono cobraram seu preço, mas há ainda outro a caminho para meados da próxima semana.

(Aileens, Ireland) October 30, 2009 – Al Mennie and Andrew Cotton are not afraid to commit! They have just managed to surf three giant swells in two oceans all within a one week period! The duo racked up over 8,000 miles last week in order to surf two swells at Aileens, Ireland and compete at the Nelscott Tow-In Classic, Oregon.

“All this madness started late on Saturday, October 17th when we got an email from John Forse saying that the contest may run on Wednesday the 21st, but they would make the final call on Monday!” This was going to give us less than 48 hours (considering the time difference) notice to get to Oregon!” I immediately phoned Cotty and we started thinking fast.” – Al Mennie

Al called Eric Akiskalian at Towsurfer.com for his thoughts on the forcasted swell. Eric has been working with Al and Cotty from the start of their towsurfing careers on board designs and equipment needs! As it turned out, Eric had already booked a flight to Lincoln City to surf the same swell at South Reef and the slab so the guys were pretty sure John Forse and Adam Wagner were going to call the event on.

“I didn’t want to hassle John and Adam as I’m sure every surfer in the event was calling them asking if they were going to run it so Eric’s thoughts and input along with his years of experience in the Oregon region kind of gave me an idea of what was going to happen!”- Andrew Cotton

The contest was called for Thursday the 22nd and this was great news for Al and Cotty as there was also a huge

swell forecast for Aileens on the Tuesday. They organized the next few days like a military operation. Flights, sleep and car journey times were calculated to the hour so that they could surf both the Aileens swell and make it to Oregon in time to compete. They didn’t want to jeopardize the contest or the swell at home and knowing how rare big surf is, they did both.

Aileens turned out to produce a solid angry swell. It was almost on the brink of being too treacherous on the inside to perform pick ups if someone fell. Al and Cotty were joined by 6 other skis and surfers that day including locals, Aussies and Englishmen. The small group charged some of the biggest Aileens ever with reported wave face heights between 40′ and 50′.

Right after surfing this massive swell they boarded a flight to Oregon while going on their second night of no sleep to arrive at the event at 1:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. That same morning they met John at first light for a contest briefing and also to witness big wave riders Eric Akiskalian and Kieth Galbraith out on South Reef, charging giant bombs with 35′ – 40′ face heights at day break. The contest was amazing and Al and Cotty said they had one of the most fun surfs of their lives out there.

“It was so surfable this day and it was so good to be able to actually do big carves and turns on waves, I’m stoked John invited us again!” Al Mennie

After the event, they looked at the charts and to their amazement Aileens was going to break as soon as they got back. They jumped on a plane out of the States and immediately got their kit ready and drove to Aileens. The swell wasn’t as big as the first swell of the week but still some waves were coming through so Al, Cotty and Paul rotated each other into the mix and then went to another nearby island for a few more waves. Full exhaustion and sleep deprivation has kicked in but there is yet another swell due for mid next week!

Alfy Cater e Delroy Carr faturam um grande swell na Austrália

“Foi muita pressão. Nós estávamos lá sozinhos, e normalmente temos muitos outros surfistas tentando surfar nesse pico,” continuou Alfy. “De repente eles se desencorajaram pelo vento de 40 nós que sopraram na região de manhã cedo. Nós não pensamos que estaria tão grande e estávamos todos surpresos. A água estava com uma cor estranha de chocolate devido às tempestades, e estava muito fria. Para ser honesto, eu ficava feliz só de sentar no carro quente. Mas foi então que o vento parou e tudo se encaixou. Depois tivemos a chance de olhar as fotos, e eu fiquei surpreso e chocado quão grande estava,” concluiu ele.

Durante a sessão, Alfy tomou umas bombas de ficar arrepiado. Em uma onda ele disse que tentou “desacelerar um pouco e fiquei preso quando a onda acabou me puxando e me jogando como um boneco.” Já para Delroy Carr eles tiveram muita sorte. Ele que estava em sua primeira viagem com Alfy, disse que “teve uma onda grande que perdemos porque não conseguimos virar com velocidade suficiente para pegá-la. Estou muito inclinado para voltar lá em outro dia de grandes ondas, e tentar fazer melhor ainda.”

O fotógrafo Russel Ord estava lá para capturar toda a ação. Suas imagens estão agora na disputa para o prestigioso prêmio, que vem sendo apresentado todo ano para premiar as maiores ondas surfadas em águas da Austrália, Ásia e Tasmânia. O resultado será dado em Fevereiro de 2010. A onda de Alfy Cater is disputando cabeça a cabeça com uma onda épica do vencedor do ano passado, Mark Mathews de Maroubra. Black water. Howling wind. Sheets of rain. And on top of all that, seven metre deep-ocean swells exploding over remote limestone reef. That’s what greeted expert big-wave riders Alfy Cater and Dave Delroy Carr last week off the south-west Australian coast.
Yet from the madness has come magic: a thrilling contender ride for the $35,000 Oakley Surfing Life Big Wave Awards. “It was really full-on,“ says Alfy, who is a previous winner of the Awards (he took Biggest Wave in 2007 for a nine-metre monster off a reef near his home in Dunsborough, WA).

“It was pretty mental, we were out there by ourselves – usually there are a lot of other surfers trying to ride that spot.” Perhaps they were discouraged by the 40-knot gales that blew across the region earlier in the day. Or maybe they were just intimidated by the sheer size of the waves.

“We didn’t think it was going to be that big and we were all surprised,” says Alfy. “The water was a weird chocolate brown from the storms, and very cold. To be honest, I was happy just to sit in the warm car. “But then the wind dropped and it got really magic. “After we had a chance to look at the photos, I was definitely surprised and shocked at how large it was.”

In the process Alfy took some hair-raising beatings. On one wave in particular, he says: “I tried to burn off a bit of speed and I just stalled way too much and the wave drew me back up the face, picked me up and threw me like a little rag-doll.” “We were pretty lucky,” admitted Delroy Carr, who was on his first adventure with Cater. “There was one big one we missed because we couldn’t turn fast enough to catch it.

“I’m pretty keen to get back there on another big day, try to do better again.”

Photographer Russell Ord was there to capture the action. His image is now in contention for the ultra-prestigious Awards, which are presented each year for the biggest waves ridden in Australasian waters. The Awards will be judged in February 2010.

Carlos Burle e Maya Gabeira foram para a África do Sul, Cidade do Cabo, mais precisamente no pico de Dungeons, em busca de um dos maiores swells do ano até agora. As previsões se confirmaram e os Big Riders brasileiros surfaram ondas gigantes estimadas em mais de 40 pés em condições extremas.

Esse dia épico rendeu a indicação ao prêmio de Maior Onda da Temporada do Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards 2009/2010, considerado o Oscar mundial do surf de ondas grandes.

Assim como na mesma época do ano passado, o mar ultrapassou os 30 pés de face, atraindo a atenção de alguns dos maiores nomes do surfe em ondas grandes.

Além de Burle e Maya, o californiano Greg Long e os sul africanos Andrew Marr e Grant “Twiggy” Baker também entraram na briga com as ondas surfadas no mega swell sul africano.

Burle, conta um pouco em seu Blog como foi a experiência desse dia inesquecível:
“Nessa terça, 11 de agosto, o maior swell da temporada quebrou na temida bacada de Dungeons (Calabouço). As ondas subiram em condições adversas, com um vento maral que dificultou muito a performance das duplas. Eu peguei uma bomba enorme – uma daquelas da vida. (…) Maya surfou as maiores ondas da sua vida e colocou mais uma vez seu nome na história do surf mundial,” disse o campeão mundial.
