No dia 11 de janeiro de 2010, Waimea voltou a quebrar em condições perfeitas para o big surf na remada. As séries bombaram com ondas entre 25 e 30 pés sólidos.

Os brasileiros Felipe Cesarano, Stephan Figueiredo, Yan Guimarães, Maya Gabeira, entre outros, botaram pra baixo nas maiores ondas do dia.

O destaque foi para Felipe Cesarano e Yan Guimarães que remaram forte na maior série do dia e botaram pra baixo numa bomba gigante. Yan despencou em um drop insano e não conseguiu seguir na onda. Mas, Felipe Cesarano segurou o drop e fez a onda até ser engolido pela espuma, que já não tinha tanta pressão.

On January 11, 2010, Waimea was in perfect conditions for big surf. The waves was about 25 and 30 feet solid.

The Brazilian Felipe Cesarano, Stephan Figueiredo, Yan Guimarães, Maya Gabeira, among others, was in the water and did great job.

The highlight was Felipe Cesarano and Yan Guimaraes. They paddled strong in the biggest serie of the day and have rided a giant bomb. Yan did an insane drop but fell in a wipeout. But Felipe Cesarano have took the drop and completed the wave. He said that was one of the biggest waves he ever ridded.

This wave comes easily in the race for the XXL Monster Paddle 2010. What do you think?

Em um dia de surf gigante no norte shore de Oahu, uma onda em Waimea Bay ficou acima do resto.

“Ela quebrou há cerca de 100 metros, além dos surfistas”, disse um salva-vidas, que estimou em mais de 40 pés de face (cerca de mais de 12 metros). “Todo mundo no outside foi varrido”, disse.

Cerca de 20 surfistas estavam na água e cerca de 10 placas foram danificadas ou quebradas por essa onda. Na sequência, um salva-vidas em seu jet ski particular resgatou cerca de 15 surfistas. “Foi a maior onda do dia”, disse Sylvain Cazenave, que fotografava quando a onda quebrou.

Cazenave, que visita a costa norte do Havaí todo ano desde 1980, disse que os surfistas não tinham como sair do caminho daquela onda. “Aqueles caras remavam muito rápido mas todos foram varridos pela onda. Muitas pranchas foram quebradas.”, disse ele.

Se era para pegar ondas gigantes ou para assistir outros tentarem, milhares de pessoas se reuniram no North Shore da ilha de Oahu, no Havaí. “É o tipo de ondas fortes que nós ganhamos uma vez ou duas vezes por ano”, disse o capitão de segurança no oceano, Bodo Van Der Leeden, do distrito de North Shore.

Algumas ondas em Waimea Bay bombaram com 40 pés de face, disse ele. “Isso é excelente para Waimea, quando se consegue pegar essas ondas.” Outras praias de North Shore foram literalmente lavadas, pois as ondas estavam muito grandes, disse Van Der Leeden.

Uma tempestade no Pacífico, ao norte do Havaí, com ventos com força de furacão gerou esse swell de Natal, que deve diminuir para 15 a 25 pés ao longo da costa Norte de Oahu e 10 a 20 pés ao longo da costa oeste.

As ondas devem diminuir mas dois grandes swells estão chegando: um no dia 28/12 e outro na festa de ano novo, segundo Sam Houston, meteorologista líder no Serviço Meteorológico Nacional.

No North Shore, os salva-vidas permitiram apenas surfistas experientes na água e colocaram avisos ao longo das praias. Todas as praias de North Shore foram fechadas para banho.

Ainda assim, os salva-vidas estavam ocupados. No norte da ilha e na costa oeste, foram 2.400 alertas, 25 salvamentos e 20 pessoas assistidas durante três horas em Honolulu, disse o porta-voz do Departamento de Serviços de Emergência Bryan Cheplic. Pelo menos dois surfistas ficaram feridos na baía de Waimea. Um sofreu um ferimento na cabeça e outro uma contusão, segundo os salva-vidas.

Tráfego na Rodovia Kamehameha ficou muito lento com uma paralisação perto de Waimea Bay devido aos espectadores reunidos ao longo da estrada e na praia para ver o big surf.

Mas o big swell também trouxe problemas de erosão com as grandes ressacas. Van Der Leeden disse que, durante o Eddie Aikau, as grandes ondulações levaram cerca de 15 metros de areia de Sunset Beach, forçando um posto salva-vidas a ser removido e ser substituído por um posto temporário. Mas, valeu o presente. “O swell trouxe um presente de Natal”, disse ele.

O swell também levou a água sobre a estrada em Laniakea e Rock Piles perto Ehukai Beach Park. Mas, as estradas não foram fechadas.

Monster waves hit the North Shore

On a day when giant surf pounded Oahu’s North Shore, one wave at Waimea Bay stood above the rest. ‘It broke about 100 yards outside of the surfers’, said one lifeguard who estimated it at higher than 40 feet (face value). ‘Everybody in the lineup was cleaned’ he said.

About 20 surfers were in the water and that some 10 boards were damaged or broken by the wave. In the aftermath, lifeguards on a personal watercraft pulled about 15 surfers out of the ocean. “It was the biggest wave,” said Sylvain Cazenave, who was taking photos when the wave hit.

Cazenave, who has been visiting the North Shore from France every year since 1980, said the surfers could not get out of its way. “Those guys were paddling very fast, but they all got nailed,” he said. “Many boards were broken.”

Whether it was to ride the monster waves or to watch others try, thousands flocked to the North Shore. “It’s the kind of high surf that we only get once or twice a year,” said Ocean Safety Capt. Bodo Van Der Leeden, of the North Shore district.

Some waves at Waimea Bay were coming in with 40-foot faces, he said. “That’s as good as it gets at Waimea.” Other North Shore beaches were washed out because the waves were too big, Van Der Leeden said.

A storm in the Pacific to the north of Hawaii with hurricane-force winds generated the Christmas Day surf, which is expected to decrease today to 15 to 25 feet along Oahu’s North Shore and 10 to 20 feet along the West Shore.

Surf will continue falling tomorrow, but two large northwest swells are coming in behind it: one on Monday and another in time for New Year’s Day, said Sam Houston, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service.

On the North Shore, lifeguards allowed only experienced surfers into the water and put up caution tape along the beaches. All North Shore beaches were closed for swimming.

Still, lifeguards were busy. On the island’s north and west sides, lifeguards gave 2,400 warnings, made 25 rescues and assisted 20 people to shore by 3 p.m., said Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic. At least two surfers were injured at Waimea Bay. One suffered a head injury and another a hamstring injury, lifeguards said.

Traffic on Kamehameha Highway slowed to a standstill near Waimea Bay as spectators gathered along the road and at the beach to watch the surf.

But the large surf also repaired some beach erosion. Van Der Leeden said high surf during the Eddie Aikau big-wave contest earlier this month took about 15 feet of sand from Sunset Beach, forcing the city to remove a lifeguard stand from its concrete foundation and replace it with a temporary lifeguard stand on skids.

The swell brought back about 10 feet of sand, he said. “The swell brought us a Christmas present,” he said.

Surf also pushed water over the highway at Laniakea and the Rock Piles surf spot near Ehukai Beach Park, but no roads were closed.
